Cycling culture in the Global South

26. Sep. 2023

A project exploring how cycling culture is spreading in cities in the Global South.

Project info
  • Location: Zimbabwe
  • Year: 2025 - 2026
  • Client: Architects Without Borders
  • Size: n/a
  • Collaborators: Active Mobility Stakeholder Group, Harare, Zimbabwe.
  • Financing: Fundraising in progress
  • Project team: Hanne Roden, Lotte Bech, Henrik Bregnhøj, Jørgen Eskemose, Anton Ryslinge
  • Contact: Anton Ryslinge: [email protected]

In this project, we investigate if and how cycling can be extended to cities in the Global South, many of which are plagued by motor vehicle dominance resulting in massive air pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, many cities in the Global South are experiencing an increase in lifestyle diseases, including obesity and diabetes, leading to poorer quality of life and increased healthcare costs.

At Architects Without Borders, we see the expansion of cycling as a key lever in creating development, as it is well documented that cycling is both a cheap and healthy form of transportation that leads to increased public health and thus savings on public budgets.
