In this project, we have worked to develop a child-friendly, safe and secure public space in the large Korogocho slum in Nairobi, Kenya. We collaborated closely with local partner organisations and a wide range of local stakeholders to improve an existing public space to better suit the needs of the neighbourhood’s children and youth.
The local partner was the Art of Music Foundation, an organization that teaches young people how to use classical instruments to build dignity, create community, develop skills and improve mental health. We have also helped formalize a collaboration between 7 local civil society organizations, empowering them to fight for political support to improve their urban environment.
The visualizations below were made by students from the School of Architecture in Nairobi, who have been involved in the project and there have seen the great need for improvement in the city’s slums. A subject that usually doesn’t take up much space in the architecture school curriculum.
