In Ukraine, many soldiers return from the front lines severely wounded and with disabilities, and—like other Ukrainians with disabilities—they are in dire need of an accessible and inclusive urban environment. A cross-ministerial Ukrainian initiative is now focusing on increasing accessibility in cities across the country, and has invited both Architects Without Borders and Engineers Without Borders to collaborate on developing knowledge and methods to ensure greater accessibility in both urban spaces and buildings.
Development goals
- To improve accessibility in Ukrainian urban spaces and public buildings, in order to reduce isolation and stigmatization and increase participation and quality of life.
- To collaborate with Ukrainian research institutions to share Danish knowledge and experience regarding accessibility and universal design.
- To support the Barrier Free Movement secretariat in developing methods and tools to address this major challenge.
Project Updates:
A kick-off seminar in Lviv is being planned for the fall of 2026.
