A Renovation and Educational Project at Mykolaiv Construction College
Regardless of the war damage, much of Ukraine’s housing stock is dilapidated and outdated, and there is a major challenge ahead in renovating it in an energy-efficient and climate-friendly manner. In the larger city of Mykolaiv, the city architect wants the local Construction College—which trains structural engineers and architects, among others—to strengthen its expertise in green construction and building renovation.
In collaboration with Engineers Without Borders, this project explores how a worn-out building on a college campus can serve as a renovation project in which teachers and students can get involved.
The project is part of Architects Without Borders’ ” Build Back Green Ukraine ” portfolio.
Development goals
- Renovate an existing educational building in collaboration with teachers and students, thereby increasing the level of knowledge at Construction College regarding building and energy renovation.
- Creating a better learning environment at Construction College.
- Establish a Green Reconstruction Lab at the Construction College, which, with input from the Danish architectural community, can enhance the level of knowledge regarding building and energy renovation in Ukraine.
Project Updates:
July 2026: A team from Architects Without Borders and Engineers Without Borders visited Mykolaiv and conducted the first in-depth preliminary surveys of the building in question, including interviews with teachers and students.
