The project takes place in the Maxaquene D slum with 22,000 residents, in close collaboration with residents and authorities. The goal of the project is to secure basic land rights for residents in one of Maputo’s large slums.
The project educates residents about the dangers of lack of land rights, such as potential forced evictions and expropriation without compensation, and how rights can be obtained. In a sub-area with approximately 20,000 residents, we work with local partners to carry out the necessary local planning work so that land ownership can be formalized and residents can obtain land rights. The project is a follow-up to a successful pilot project that was completed in 2023.
The project focuses on the root causes of slums and the low motivation to invest in small-scale housing improvements among residents. No buildings will be constructed in this project.
DEVELOPMENT TARGETS
- To reduce poverty by creating the preconditions for improved housing, mainly by removing the risk for the resident’s investment in house upgrading.
- To prevent poverty and marginalization by securing residents without formal land rights the right to remain in their community and obtain proper compensation in the case of expropriation.
- To raise awareness and knowledge about the risk of not having formal land rights and how to obtain them in Maxaquene D.
