The project’s goal is to improve the living conditions of coffee farmers and poor farm workers in the El Coyolar area of Nicaragua by creating a basis for increased earnings. That’s why we are designing and building a coffee center that includes production facilities that enable coffee farmers to process their coffee themselves (de-pulping, drying, etc.) and thus get a larger share of the added value that the coffee achieves from harvest to consumption
In addition to production facilities, the coffee-central also includes affordable housing, a dining hall, workshops, common rooms and guest rooms. The goal is for the coffee-central as a whole to become a local growth center for production, knowledge, education and cultural exchange.
The project is developed in collaboration with the social enterprise Café Directo, which, among other things, sells sustainably produced coffee to churches in Denmark.
Project update June 2023:
We recently returned from our immersive field study trip to Nicaragua, where we had the privilege of engaging with the local coffee farming community. Our days were filled with meaningful interactions, from visiting coffee farms and witnessing the processing process to participating in insightful discussions with farmers about their challenges and aspirations as well as learning about local materials and techniques.
The trip provided us with invaluable insights that will shape our future initiatives and enable us to create positive change. Now we are entering on the next phase of transforming these experiences into innovative solutions.
