The project consisted of planning, designing, and constructing two kindergartens for children aged 3-5 years old, each equipped with three classrooms and three toilets.

During the Khmer Rouge in the 60s and 70s, several educational institutions were destroyed in Cambodia. Since then, various NGOs have been financing the reconstruction of schools and kindergartens. Unfortunately, however, several of the kindergartens built in Cambodia in the late 1990s and the beginning of 2000 were built entirely in wood and have not been able to withstand the rough climatic conditions. Many of them have been destroyed by floods, termite attacks, etc.

It is therefore of great importance that the kindergartens are built from materials that are capable of withstanding such hazardous conditions, while ensuring natural ventilation and light inside the building, due to poor access to electricity.

With our design of kindergartens, we attempt to adjust to a new design methodology currently driving learning environments, putting an emphasis on playfulness and appealing to children’s creativity. As such, we have strived to approach this way of designing both socially and materially sustainable through programming and choice of materials.

DEVELOPMENT TARGETS
  • Kindergartens in Cambodia function as an introduction to the educational system in which children are taught basic skills, allowing them to proceed to 1st class in primary school.
  • The children obtain basic linguistic and physical stimulation. They furthermore learn about basic hygiene and how to utilize a bathroom. In addition to this, the teachers keep an eye on their well-being, making sure they are doing well and getting the vaccines necessary.
